Payment processing for iGaming operators, by license

TL;DR. Acquirers do not board “iGaming”. They board a licensed entity for a set of markets. Which acquirers will look at the file, what reserve they ask for, and how long the account survives all follow from the license and the traffic behind it. We place operators under MGA, UKGC, Curaçao, Anjouan, Kahnawake and US state licenses, and iGaming is a large share of the ~$4B a year we advise on.

Who this is for. Operators processing $100K+ a month in deposits, on any license, who want a second acquirer, a better reserve, or a market they cannot currently open.

What each license opens, and what it does not.

MGA (Malta)

Opens the widest set of EU acquirers and the lowest reserves in the category. Closes nothing by itself, but acquirers check that traffic matches the markets the license covers.

UKGC (United Kingdom)

Opens UK acquiring and UK open-banking rails; UK traffic without it is a termination risk at almost every acquirer. Narrow geographically: it does not help outside the UK.

Curaçao

Opens a narrower but real set of acquirers with experience in the model, usually at higher reserves and with defined target-market lists.

Anjouan, Kahnawake and others

Treated by most acquirers like Curaçao or slightly below: a defined set of providers, higher reserves, more underwriting questions about markets and ownership.

US state licenses

Each state is a separate market with its own acquirer appetite, payment methods and payout rails. Domestic acquiring boards the licensed state entity; offshore structures do not help here.

General patterns, not rules: individual acquirers are more flexible than the category suggests, which is exactly what we know and they do not advertise. Licensing advice is for your regulatory counsel; this page is about what acquirers do with each license.

Four failure modes we see repeatedly.

01

One acquirer, 100% of deposits.

Risk appetite changes on the acquirer's calendar. An operator told us its PSP was excellent and it did not need redundancy; the PSP later changed appetite and offboarded it, and revenue was zero for the weeks it took to onboard a replacement.

02

Traffic outside the license.

Deposits from markets the license does not cover, or the acquirer excluded. Discovered in the transaction data, resolved with a termination letter and a held reserve.

03

A reserve priced for the category, not the operator.

10% rolling, no cap, no release schedule, because that is the provider's default for “gaming”. A provider that actually underwrites the vertical prices your history, not the label.

04

Deposits fixed, withdrawals ignored.

Payout rails are often the weaker half of the stack. Slow or failing withdrawals turn into disputes on the deposit side and churn on the player side.

Diagnose. Improve. Prove.

Diagnose

License(s), entities, and the markets actually sending traffic. Current acquirer(s), reserve and cap terms, exclusions. Deposit approval by market, card type and issuer. Withdrawal success and timing. Scheme monitoring position.

Improve

Add the acquirer that fits the license and markets, with a reserve priced on history. Route by market. Fix the withdrawal rail. Add local methods where deposits fail, not where a catalogue says. Renegotiate the incumbent with a real alternative in hand.

Prove

Move a bounded share of deposits to the new path. Measure approval by market, dispute ratio, settlement timing, withdrawal success. Expand only when earned. Keep the incumbent until the second path has carried real traffic.

A large share of ~$4B a year.

iGaming is our deepest book: a large share of the roughly $4B a year processed through structures we have designed or advise on, across operators on MGA, UKGC, Curaçao and other licenses, in the EU, UK and US. We maintain active relationships with around 30 banks and PSPs, including most of the top ten, and in 97% of ~200 pricing reviews the offer we brought was cheaper than the incumbent.

Figures rounded. Operators are not identified.

The underwriting file.

Every acquirer that underwrites iGaming knowingly asks for the same things. Having them ready is the biggest single accelerator.

  • License certificate(s) and the entity each one covers
  • Target-market list with the legal basis per market, and the geo-blocking that enforces it
  • Group structure chart with the contracting entity and UBOs
  • AML / KYC program: onboarding, source-of-funds triggers, responsible-gambling controls
  • Processing history: six months of deposits, chargeback and fraud ratios by month, any terminations
  • Current acquirer agreements: reserve, cap, release schedule, exclusions
  • Withdrawal rails and their failure rate

Where the volume is and what carries it.

EU

Cards plus market-specific instant bank transfer and voucher methods. Acquirer choice follows the license; routing follows the market.

UK

UKGC traffic only. Cards and open banking for deposits; faster-payments rails for withdrawals.

US (regulated states)

Domestic acquiring per licensed state entity, state-specific payment methods, and payout rails. Sweepstakes is a different model: see the sweepstakes guide.

Can a Curaçao-licensed casino get card acquiring in Europe?

Yes, from a narrower set of acquirers than an MGA or UKGC operator, usually with higher reserves and tighter caps, and usually for a defined set of target markets rather than open-ended EU coverage. The acquirers that do this are experienced in the model; the ones that board instantly are the ones that offboard in month three. We place Curaçao and Anjouan operators regularly and know which is which.

Does an MGA or UKGC license guarantee acquiring?

No. It widens the list of acquirers that will look at the file and lowers the reserve they ask for, but every acquirer still underwrites the operator: ownership, markets, chargeback history, AML program, and whether the license actually covers the markets being targeted. A tier-one license with traffic from markets it does not cover is a termination waiting to happen.

What reserve should an iGaming operator expect?

It depends on license, markets and history. An established UKGC or MGA operator with clean history can see low single-digit rolling reserves; an offshore-licensed operator starting with a new acquirer often starts at 10% and negotiates down on performance. If 10% is the first and only number a provider quotes, it is pricing the vertical, not you.

Why do iGaming acquiring accounts get terminated?

Three patterns cover most cases. Traffic from markets the license does not cover, or that the acquirer excluded. A chargeback or fraud ratio that crossed a scheme monitoring threshold. Or the acquirer's risk appetite for the category changed. The third one happens on the acquirer's calendar. A second acquirer already carrying volume is the only real protection.

How many acquirers should an operator run?

At material volume, at least two carrying live traffic, with routing by market and card type. One acquirer is a single point of failure, however good it is. Three or more only when markets or volume justify the operational load. More logos at checkout is not redundancy; a tested failover is.

Which local payment methods matter for iGaming?

Market by market: open-banking and bank-transfer methods in the UK and Nordics, instant bank transfers and vouchers in parts of Europe, cards almost everywhere, and wallets where players already hold them. The mix should come from where deposits and withdrawals actually fail today, not from a provider's catalogue. Payouts are their own problem and often the weaker rail.

Can you help an operator entering a regulated US state?

Yes, at the payments layer: domestic acquiring that will board the licensed entity, the payment methods players in that state use, and payout rails. Licensing itself is for your regulatory counsel; we work with what the license allows.

How is Milestone paid for this?

By the acquirer or PSP the operator ends up using, as a commission on volume. No fee to the operator for a review. We place with whichever of ~30 providers fits the license and markets, so we have no reason to push one.
